Bite & Bite II

The seamless transition from a perfect sphere into parabolic mirror inlays creates a fascinating optical illusion in these unusual modern garden sculptures.

Bite and Bite II blend together morphing materials, demonstrating a playful interplay between concave and convex surfaces, as well as varying metals, textures and finishes.

Design details

A shiny Bite II stainless steel and copper abstract contemporary sculpture stands on a manicured lawn, reflecting the sky and trees. Behind it are trimmed hedges, shaped bushes, and leafless trees beneath a clear sky—creating a serene garden scene.

The original Bite garden sculpture is created from verdigris copper spheres, with three concave curves of mirror-polished stainless steel – or bites – to draw the viewer in and reflect the surroundings.

Bite II features two offset conical faces of mirror-polished stainless steel which meet in the middle to create a mirrored vortex of distorted reflections.

A pencil sketch of a modern, abstract sculpture resembling the Bite & Bite II stainless steel and copper contemporary sculpture, with shading, labeled sections, and handwritten notes. Loose lines and scribbles outline the crescent-shaped structure and base.
Close-up of a smooth, reflective Bite & Bite II stainless steel and copper abstract contemporary sculpture with curved surfaces, set against a textured turquoise background. The metal reflects light and distorted gold and green colours, suggesting outdoor surroundings.
A man wearing a work coat and sweater closely inspects a large, ribbed metal cylinder—part of the Bite II stainless steel and copper abstract contemporary sculpture. His fingers touch its surface as he works outdoors near industrial equipment. The image is black and white.

Skilled welding of copper and stainless steel is meticulously carried out to ensure a seamless transition between the materials.

A large Bite & Bite II stainless steel and copper abstract contemporary sculpture, metallic blue-green and spherical with a shiny, hollow center, stands on a short pole in a landscaped garden at RHS Chelsea with soft evening lighting and a modern building behind.

The sculpture has no integral lighting, and needs to be lit externally or with ambient lighting.

Product information

David Harber provides a steel tube which is cast into the ground by the client at the desired location and secured with a concrete foundation. Bite is then fixed onto the tube once the concrete has been cured.

Installation and delivery are included in the price for UK commissions, and overseas shipping quotes can be obtained and charged at cost.

The copper will exhibit some natural weathering with age. However, periodic cleaning will help preserve its beauty. We would recommend that it be cleaned at least once a year but only with warm water and a soft cloth to remove any detritus. Use of any abrasive cleaner will damage the finish and must be avoided. More specifically, to clean the stainless steel, wipe the mirror-polished surface very gently with a soft, damp microfibre cloth or tissue.

Maintenance instructions will be issued on installation.
